ABSTRACT
Crude oil spillage is related to petroleum production chain; it poses a risk to the marine habitat and
potential threat to humans through seafood consumption. In this study, the polyaromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentration of the catfish with and without crude oil contamination was
analyzed using gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The results revealed high
level of PAHs including acenaphthylene (142.334), flourene (124.855), anthracene (179.854),
pyrene (135.387), benzo(a)anthracene (166.657), chrysene (162.184), benzo(a)floura (175.454),
benzo(a)pyre (113.593), dibenzo(ah)anthra (164.241), benzo(ghi)peryle (122.021) and
indeno(123-cd)pyre (54.448) in catfish cultured with 1.0% crude oil contaminated water compared
with the PAHs of catfish cultured with 0% crude oil contaminated water. Overall, the findings
from this study calls for urgent actions aimed at identifying and eliminating sources of
polyaromatic hydrocarbon pollution of the marine environment. Inhabitants of oil producing
communities are encouraged to reduce seafood consumption while diversifying their protein
sources to include non-seafood options
